Women in Hip Hop
Between 2001 and 2003, Colleen hooked up with Melbourne Hip Hop artist, MC Q (AKA Mary Quinscara) to create All The Ladies: Women in Hip Hop Documentary and a series of short profiles on women in the Australian Hip Hop scene. All The Ladies has screened at a number of national and international film festivals and won a few awards along the way. We still get requests today for it to be screened. It’s latest reincarnation was at ACMI’s Australia Day Event 2014 at Federation Square in Melbourne. All The Ladies was screened on the big outdoor screen as part of an Australian Hip Hop Retrospective. Read More.

All The Ladies Reviews:
“All The Ladies is a stylish exploration of female emcees in Australia’s vibrant underground hip-hop scene. Combining live performances, freestyle rhymes and interviews, Hughson and Quinsacara create a compelling portrait of four of Australia’s most prominent female artists in a subculture that is largely dominated by male talent. Accompanied by a dynamic soundtrack featuring A-Love, Little-G, MC Que and Maya Jupiter”
–Real Life on Film Documentary Film Festival (2004)
“More positively, All the Ladies stood out as a local gem, progressive without being preachy. The directors Mary Quinsacara (aka MC Que, who also performs in the film) and Colleen Hughson, focus on female performers in Australia’s hip hop scene. The buoyant tone was set by Melbourne MC Little G’s introduction: “My mother is Aboriginal, my father Greek, and that’s how I became a wogorigine.” While the participants acknowledge that the scene has previously been dominated by men, the charismatic female MCs prefer to talk about the moments of epiphany that led to their love affair with hip hop. Mark Latham and John Howard need look no further for the true face of Australian multiculturalism.”

B-Girl Demolition (2005)
Melbourne-based BGirl Demilition is an awesome dancer and an all round’ top chick. Check out her dance moves.
Myself and Mc Q (AKA Mary Quinscara) produced this profile on B Girl Demolition back in 2005 for a bit of fun. Created with very basic camera gear (Hey, we all had to start somewhere!.)
